Bridging the gap between lab-bench breakthroughs and scalable market execution is essential for building a resilient innovation economy. On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the Pycap team joined leaders across Ontario's innovation ecosystem at Humber Polytechnic’s North Campus for Research Unplugged 2026. Hosted at the state-of-the-art Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation, the annual showcase brought together researchers, founders, funding agencies, and capital providers to turn applied research into commercial enterprise.
Pycap hosted a booth inside the Investor/Funders Marketplace, engaging directly with emerging entrepreneurs, SME leaders, and academic innovators exploring their next stages of capital formation and operational growth.
Connecting Capital with Applied Research
Humber Polytechnic’s Office of Research & Innovation (ORI) co-hosted the event with the Ontario Center of Innovation (OCI) and Altitude Accelerator. The day highlighted how structured industry–academic partnerships help ventures solve technical bottlenecks, validate intellectual property, and access strategic non-dilutive resources—including Humber's internal allocation of $120,000 in research support.
At our marketplace booth, conversations centered on what happens beyond research validation:
Navigating the Early-Stage Funding Runway: Aligning grant capital and non-dilutive funding programs (such as Mitacs and OCI) with institutional angel networks and early-stage venture capital.
Commercialization Readiness: Helping technical founders transition from university prototypes to market-ready products with repeatable business models.
Operational Discipline: Structuring funding opportunities, defining defensible unit economics, and executing scalable go-to-market strategies.
Spotlight: The Innovation & Growth Pitch Competition
A major highlight of this year’s expo was the debut of the Innovation & Growth Pitch Competition, designed to accelerate high-potential small and medium enterprises (SMEs) facing immediate scaling opportunities.
Supported by ecosystem partners including MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund (IAF), eCampusOntario, Kiwi Charge, and Labs4, the competition gave finalists targeted preparation before pitching to a panel of active institutional and angel investors. The standout performers earned cash backing, commercialization advisory support, DiscoveryX access, and a direct presentation slot at an upcoming Altitude Angels Investment Meeting.
Seeing early-stage teams present practical solutions to real-world industrial and digital challenges reaffirmed the caliber of technical talent emerging across the Greater Toronto Area.
Strengthening Ontario's Innovation Pipeline
Transforming academic and industrial research into high-growth, venture-backed companies requires a connected ecosystem. Meaningful collaboration among polytechnic research facilities, public funding bodies, and early-stage investment firms ensures high-potential IP stays well supported through commercialization.
Pycap remains committed to supporting ambitious founders and collaborating with institutions like Humber Polytechnic to turn applied research into companies that create value.
